A 41-year old French teacher, Slimane Salhi, went on trial on charges of ordering an acid attack on the former principal of the French Lycee in Lagos, Nigeria.
Now the man faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of paying an unidentified man to carry out the 2010 attack, which disfigured the victim and blinded him in one eye.
Prosecutors in the Yonne department (where the victim originates from) allege that Salhi attacked the principal after he informed the French and Philosophy teacher that his contracts would not be renewed because of his irregular conduct.
For example, it included driving a car with unauthorised diplomatic plates and lending money to colleagues.
The court heard that 5 days before the attack, Salhi (originally from Roubaix in northern France) had thrown acid on the tyres of the principal’s car.
The defendant described the incident as a “practical joke” and said he had no animosity towards his boss.

South Africa-based defender James Okwuosa made his international debut for Nigeria. super-eagels Brown Ideye, who until now, constantly misses scoring chances, gave the Eagles the lead in the 13th minute, when he capitalised on a blunder by Burkina Faso goalkeeper Lare Diarra.
The Dynamo Kiev striker later doubled the advantage on 43 minutes, when he got to the end of a through ball by John Ogu before he clipped the ball past the Burkina Faso goalkeeper.
Newcastle United Shola Ameobi fired Eagles’ third goal in the 53rd minute for his first goal for the Nigerian national side. He celebrated the goal with such an uncommon zeal..
Substitute Emmanuel Emenike completed the rout with a fourth goal in the 63rd minute as Nigeria turned on the style inside a packed Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
The Etalons pulled a goal back late on when a cross evaded everyone before Simpore tapped home from the back post.

The Rivers State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Monday called on the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end their feud.

The leader of the group, Mr Jonas Adokiye, who made the appeal while addressing government house officials in Port Harcourt, said the lingering strike was doing harm to students.
He said the strike had turned most of the students into armed robbers and prostitutes, noting that some students had engaged themselves in various kinds of criminal activities, due to idleness.
The unionist urged well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on ASUU and the Federal Government to return to the negotiation table.
Adokiye who is also the Director of Action and Mobilisation of NANS, also called for the appointment of a senior special assistant to the governor to oversee student matters. He pleaded with the Rivers Government to also provide buses to ease movement of students in Rivers, appealing for the payment of bursary to students.
The Permanent Secretary in the Rivers State Government House, Mr Fortune Oguru, commended the group for conducting themselves peacefully.
He appealed to students to be patient, promising to pass their message to the governor, whom he said, was away on official assignment.
Oguru assured the students that the outcome of the negotiations between government and ASUU would ensure better learning and teaching.

The Osuagwu's

Actor and comedian, Victor Osuagwu, met Roseline when she was in her third year in junior secondary school! The couple share the experiences of their eight-year-old marriage
How did you meet?
Roseline: We met as far back as 1990. He had enrolled at the School of Basic Studies in Choba, my maternal home town, where the University of Port Harcourt is situated.  I was living in my father’s house in another area but anytime I visited my relatives, I would see him. The first day I visited, he saw me and said he was going to marry me.  I thought he was joking but he started treating me like his younger sister.  Then, I was in Junior Secondary School 3. He helped cut my hair and wash my uniform.
Victor:  I was in the University of Port Harcourt when I met a little girl who was still in the secondary school. Since she was still at a tender age, I decided to allow her grow to a point when I could marry her.
How long did you date before you got married?
Roseline:  If we calculate the period of courtship and marriage, we have been together for 20 years.
Victor: We courted for almost nine years before we started thinking about marriage. I officially married her in 2002.
How has the journey in matrimony been?
Roseline:  It has been beautiful. We share things in common and he does not hide anything from me. I don’t hide things from him too because we grew up together.
Victor:   It has been a happy marriage and we have not shouted at each other once. Though we have had our ups and downs, we are doing very well.
Being an actor and comedian, are there occasions you don’t know whether to take your husband serious or not?
Roseline:  I understand him well and know when he is serious and when he is not.
Do you laugh at his jokes?
Roseline: Yes. He makes me laugh.  Besides, in the house, we are all comedians. After my secondary school, he urged me to pursue a diploma in Theatre Arts while I awaited my JAMB result.  After I gained admission, I switched over to Political Science and Administrative Studies.
Do you ever quarrel?
Roseline: No, you can’t see us quarrel.
If you are angry with him, what do you do?
Roseline: If I am angry with him for any reason, I will point it out to him. I will tell him that I don’t like what he did and if he is at fault, he would apologise.  I don’t have issues with him in the area of fidelity because he is not a womaniser. He does not know if another woman exists besides me, but he could make other mistakes. I talk to him like a brother and we understand each other very well. We don’t quarrel.  People in our neighbourhood are always amazed at our union.  Couples come to me seeking tips on how to have a successful marriage.
Victor: We don’t even quarrel. I beg her every time to accept to quarrel with me, even if it is once. Truth is, if I entertain people and make them happy, there is no reason why I should make my own family unhappy.   I have even injected my comedy traits into her so much so that she cracks jokes more than I do. I see her as a special creation. I don’t make her angry and if I do, it is like making my mother angry.
How do you hang out as a couple?
Roseline: We sometimes go out to spend time alone or stay in our room when we are at home. Then, we would tell the children that they should give us space because this is the time for mummy and daddy.
Victor: Sometimes, I take her out and sometimes, we travel abroad. I am making plans to take her to the United States on our next vacation.  This is the magic I use to keep the marriage going — I treat her well and make her feel like she is a sweet girl. There is no other way to celebrate a woman than to let her know that she is still as sweet as she was when you first met her. Let her understand that she is still a brand new woman for you even if she has given birth to children. Once that is done, your home will always be in a very good order. Some men find it difficult to even take their wives out. I believe you should take your wife out. This is because she will feel good and her love for you will be renewed.
How do you cope when his work takes him away for a very long time?
Roseline: At such times, what I do is to pray for him. I will gather the children and we will pray for God’s protection and that God should make a way for him.  We know that he is a humble man, not the type who would go away, leaving the wife to wonder where her husband is.  When he travels, he can call more than 10 times a day. He would inform me before leaving wherever he is, then as the journey progresses, whichever point he gets to, he would call to tell me where he is.
Do you operate a joint account?
Roseline: No, we don’t operate a joint account.  He has his own account and I have mine but our money is spent together. If he is going to withdraw money, he will let me know and once he brings the money, we would plan on how to spend it for the family and other needs at home. Also, he reserves aside a portion for specific purposes.
How have you affected each other’s lives?
Roseline:  God has favoured me and my husband, to the extent that if he is picking up a job, he would call me and inform me about the job and the amount they are willing to pay. I will advise him to accept the job after calculating his transportation and other expenses.  I am always happy and  have a relaxed mind.    If somebody makes him angry, he would seek my advice before reacting. Once he calls me to complain, I ask him to calm down and advise him to be cautious and not fight cases in court. He should not have enemies. He cannot do without my advice because he knows I proffer the right advice to him.
Victor:  She makes me have a sense of responsibility. No matter my work outside, I always remember my home and family. I always want to go back home and kiss my wife.  My wife and children are always there to pray for me.

An Interview with Kcee

At what point in your life did you decide to go into music?
Music for me started right from when I was in secondary school. Initially, I was playing football but later, I started singing in the church choir. Moreover, my father was a Disc Jockey and I was already listening to a whole lot of music. My musical career took off effectively in 2002 when I emerged winner of Star Quest.
What happened after you won the prize money? Was your brother, Emeka Okonkwo, alias E-Money, rich then?
My brother was very poor at the time we entered for Star Quest. I was the one who helped him. He was our manager and we lived together in Ajegunle ghetto. He did not make money until later.  We hustled together.
Did your parents support your decision to go into music?
My mother supported me from the start. My father, like most fathers, was hoping I would study hard and become a doctor or lawyer.  He was not in support of my career choice at first but when I started bringing money home, he realised that I could actually make money from music. Then, he started supporting and praying for me.
What inspires you on stage?
It is when I see my audience cheering and getting ready to see me, it makes me want to go crazy; it makes me want to do more.
Do you see any other of your music tracks making waves like the hit track, Limpopo?
I would say yes.  My music has been rising from when I did Okpekete. I have been recording and getting better by the day and I feel the best is yet to come by the grace of God. I just dropped a new single which leaked and started trending on social media.
What did you study in school?
I studied Theatre Arts at the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
How do you keep reinventing yourself?
The major thing about me is that I like creating something new and different at every point in time, my videos are unique and different because I work with my brain every second. I am constantly creating.
What language is Limpopo?
It was just a slang I created but after the song, I found out that there is a river in South Africa and a street in Abuja by the name Limpopo.
Your profile has been rising since you split from Presh…?
I cannot tie it down to the split but I can say I have been working hard and been consistent.  After the split, I was determined to make an impact. I think that helped me get to where I am today.
What do you miss most about working with Presh?
A lot. We have been friends for 12 years and the arguments we used to have whenever we tried to come up with some ideas are what I miss most. Sometimes, I am left to wonder if decisions I take alone are better. We are still friends and I still wish him the best and pray that God will elevate and project him also.
Rumours have it that your brother, E-money, influenced the split
That is a big lie; he never wanted us to split. When we split, Presh’s first video was sponsored by him and he has been supporting him since.
Presh is not doing as well as you and there is this belief that he is not fortunate to have a brother like yours, who pumps money into all your projects
The whole matter is beyond money, it is about the drive. I know a lot of my colleagues that people pump millions into their career and there are no results to show for it. My rise to the top is by the grace of God who has decided that it is my time to make a mark in the industry.
Do you see the two of you coming back as a group?
I cannot say because we never saw the break-up coming. We did not fight.
What are the tattoos on your upper arms for?
I have a rose flower, which is a sign of love. Inside the rose, there are two birds which signify freedom. I have a diamond by the side which stands for riches, and then there is a star, which is a symbol of my image. I had them done in Spain.
What does style mean to you?
Style to me is telling people who you are. If you see my car and the kinds of things I like in my house, you would understand me better. That will also tell you that I like colours. Fashion is in my blood. Sometimes, I don’t waste time standing in front of the mirror. If I open my wardrobe, I know what to put on. I have an eye to pick whatever suits me. At every point in time, I make sure I look smart and nice.  Before I put on anything, it is already selected and on point.
What is your least favourite dress?
Native wear. It is not what I want to wear every time but I wear them because of our culture. They, sometimes, look good on me but it is not a style I can die for.
What is your favourite fashion accessory?
One thing I don’t joke with is my stud earring, I don’t have any particular reason but I can’t be caught dead without my studs.
What informs your trim figure?
It is natural but I also have a gym in the house where I exercise regularly. I try as much as I can to look fit because of my career.
What is your favourite meal?
White soup and wheat
Can you clear the air on your marital status and the alleged affair you had with actress, Ebube Nwagbo?
Most times, I don’t like talking about marriage because it is a private issue.  But to clear the air, I never said I was married or not. The person that did the interview made a mistake. They  asked a simple question about a wedding in Lekki some years back and I told them it was not my wedding, it was E-Money’s wedding.
Were you dating Ebube at the time?
Yes.
Were you married at the time?
(Giggles) I don’t want to talk about it; I think we should move on.
People also said you were separated from your wife, only for you to be seen with her again?
I think we should go to the next question.  Leave people alone, let them be talking.

STUDENTS WANT THE ASUU STRIKE TO GO ON - ASUU PRESIDENT

In a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, the President of the union, Dr. Isa Fagge, said students were tired of the incessant industrial actions by the university lecturers due to the Federal Government’s failure to implement the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.
Fagge said the union had decided to heed the advice of the students to continue the strike until the Federal Government fully implemented the agreement.
“Our students have come out to say they don’t want us to call off the strike until the Federal Government answers us, because they don’t want us to call off now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice of our students,” he said.
On the complaint by the Federal Government that it lacked the funds to implement the agreement, Fagge said it was not all about money, noting that government did not need funds to start implementing some parts of the agreement.
“There are issues and agreement they can implement without money. Why don’t they begin with those ones?” he asked.
He added that it was unfortunate that the government had pulled out of dialogue with ASUU, stating that the union would not be intimidated.
He said, “Now, government has pulled out of the dialogue. We thought we were the ones going on strike, but now government has also gone on strike.”
Last Thursday, university students under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students reportedly staged a peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti and flayed the Federal Government for failing to honour the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.
The students, who were from public universities, threatened to disrupt activities of private universities, adding that the government was not bothered about their plight because children of government officials were studying either in private universities or studying overseas.
The university lecturers began an indefinite strike on July 1 and have been demanding full implementation of the agreement ASUU had with the Federal Government in 2009, which among other things include the UNESCO-recommended 26 per cent budgetary allocation for education. However, the government said it could not implement the agreement, and is seeking re-negotiation.
The Federal Government, last Wednesday, accused ASUU of being unrealistic by continuing its nationwide strike and asked it to rethink its demands, considering other commitments government has.
The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who gave government’s position on the strike when he briefed journalists at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, said apart from security, education was one of the sectors the government had expended a lot of money on.

Man rapes 3 women in less than one hour.

A paranoid schizophrenic has been detained indefinitely at a maximum security hospital after he raped three women in less than an hour during a series of violent attacks.
Serial rapist Thomas Hall, 33, attacked four sex workers after prowling around Piccadilly train station, in Manchester.
Hall, who raped three of the women and sexually assaulted the other, is said to have bragged to a friend on the phone 'I've done three or four now. I've had the best night of my life' after attacking his last victim.

Manchester Crown Court heard how Hall had heard voices in his head telling him to 'get everyone'.
Two of the women ran half-naked down the street and flagged down passing motorists to raise the alarm following the attacks, the court was told.

Nigeria’s Wizkid, Ice Prince and P Square made that category alongside other African artistes.
The event is scheduled to hold in South Africa on November 30.

New Largest Croc

A new crocodile, Lolong as named, has been discovered in the marsh areas of the eastern part of the world, having a length of 6.17m, and now recorded to be the longest crocodile in the world.

New and upcoming actress stresses her ambition to be known world wide.

Though new in Nollywood, she is now a producer with her debut movie in the making
Who is Monalisa Omorodion?
I was born in London on the 27th of April, 1990. I was in Corona Primary School, Victoria Island, Atlantic Hall Secondary School and then, the University of Lagos, where I studied Economics. I’m the fifth in a family of six— four girls and two boys.   As a child, I was loved and pampered. My father taught us the value of service. I worked as my father’s personal assistant and receptionist instead of being a director! I learnt from that and I’m glad he made me go through all that. Now, I enjoy the privileges of being a responsible young adult.
Journey into Nollywood
It has always been my dream to act. Growing up, I wanted to be an actor but my parents were worried and disagreed with me on that. I was called the ‘drama queen’ right from primary school. I had an internship with Chico Ejiro and was behind the scenes but I felt incomplete and I realised I belonged in front of the camera.
When the time was right, with the help of my sisters, I was able to convince them. Right now, I have my family’s support and I am debuting with my own film.
Relationship with other acts
I don’t get intimidated by any big names in the industry, rather I admire them. When I know I’m working with a well-known actor in a movie, it motivates me to be the best I can be on set. This means I will live and breathe that script.

though it was a bit of a surprise that the super eagles could not score against 10 man Malawi, due to the 2 yellow cards received by Limbikani Mzava, but have secured their place in the final qualifying round of the Brazil 2014.

PDP members are welcome to APC - ODIGIE ODEGUN

Odigie-OyegunThird Republic governor of Edo State and leader of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, in this interview with LEKE BAIYEWU, highlight what the newly-registered party has in stock to win the hearts of the electorate
Now that the Independent National Electoral Commission has finally registered the All Progressives Congress as a party, what is the next step?
First, I’m not a member of the APC interim executive. I’ll be speaking from the backdrop of what we’ve been saying and my personal perspective of what the future holds. For me, we have completed phase one; the critical phase. It is like building a vehicle with which to undertake a journey. We have completed the vehicle; we have tested it and it is roadworthy. Now, we are going to move into the phase two, which include building the structure and institution that will support this vehicle. This means that we are going to set up the structure of the party in all the states. We are going to design our message and move to the state, local government and ward congresses to set up the structures of this new, progressive party. And of course, we are going to organise a convention that will elect national officers.
Some people keep on talking about ideology. It is very simplistic to be shouting for ideology. The days of communism, capitalism and socialism have all gone. What is important today is who best serves the interests of the people; who best heeds to the yearnings of the people; who is best placed to restore hope to the people; by what mix of policies can we return smiles to the faces of our people? These are the issues. It is not whether it is communism or capitalism. This means that we are taking very seriously the burden of meeting the yearnings of the Nigerian people. We are going to come out at the proper time with a mission statement and it will address all the questions of the ordinary Nigerians. Things they have been crying over for many years; thing we all have been agitating for; things that have seem insoluble for many years; these are the things this party will address. And we are going to act within a time frame; we are not just going to make promises. We are going to say ‘hold us responsible, if by this time we have not addressed your issues.’ We are going to be that specific.
Phase three is to plan for elections. Fortunately, we are going to drive the vehicle soon in Anambra State and in Delta State before then, because there’s a senatorial vacancy there. What is important is that we are going to tell the people of this country what we have in stock for them.
Has APC’s registration changed your perception of the Independent National Electoral Commission?
On matters like this, I have a conservative state of mind. We are very sentimental in this country. For example, when we get a judgment from a court that favours us, we blow trumpets, praising the judiciary to high heavens. But when we get contrary judgments, we also condemn judges to high heavens. I don’t want to fall into that kind of situation. Yes, INEC has done well. It has shown that it has some backbone; it has shown that it can resist pressure. But let me make a point clear, it was because we too made it easy for INEC because we dotted all i’s and across all t’s. As we were negotiating, we had in front of us the constitution of the Federal Republic and the Electoral Act. Whatever was prescribed by these two documents, we made sure we over-fulfilled. It is also good to say that INEC did well by admitting that we fulfilled all the conditions. Obviously, we were not going to bend to any pressure. After all, there are cases in court over the acronym ‘APC.’ If INEC was very weak, they could have used that as an excuse. But they were bold and forthright. My prayer is that they should carry these courage and forthrightness into the future electoral processes.
It is going to be a very stressful undertaking, giving the kind of drums that are being beating in the polity now, but I’m confident, with what they have done, that they are going to do much better in the future.
Leaders of the APC have always described the party as a better alternative to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. What are the qualities the APC has that the PDP lacks?
We are not really an alternative because we are espousing different philosophies and different ways of doing things. We don’t want to see ourselves as an alternative; all we are doing is that we are presenting the Nigerian public with a real, credible choice. And we are going to tell them why they should prefer us to the PDP, based on records. These things are clear; the performance of the PDP in office and the performance of our governors in office. If we just pick a state like Lagos and the achievements recorded there, and translate it into the Federal Government, you can imagine the dramatic change this nation will go through. There’s a choice now. Yes, if you want to call it an alternative, let’s not argue over it. But the Nigerian public now has credible choice. Without choice, there’s no democracy.
What precisely is the credibility you’re talking about? Can you identify the difference between the two parties?
I singled out Lagos State, let me broaden it. I’m from Benin in Edo State. What has happened in almost five years in Edo State was inconceivable in the last 10 years. We had 10 years of PDP non-stop governance. Under the APC – it’s no more ACN – administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, we have been able to achieve in four years what we were not able to achieve in 10 years of PDP administration. There’s no comparison. What we want to say is that welfare of the people is going to be the core of governance under the APC. That is a significant, major difference. Our slogan says ‘change.’ We cannot continue business as usual; we are offering the people a change for the better. We are offering a new way of doing things. We are offering governance that will produce results in line with what is the aspiration of the people. That is the difference.
Some people are of the opinion that the APC may not be better after all because some ex-members of the PDP, which the APC often condemn, are in the new party and more of them are still coming to eventually make the two parties look alike. Do you agree?
It a bit of a puerile argument; it is a very simplistic one. What matters is not where the individual is coming from, it is the atmosphere of where he is going; guiding principles, strength and commitment of where he is going. We can only come in when he agrees to be governed by the standards of the new institution. We don’t want people at all cost, no. It is not about the individuals in the PDP, it is the political atmosphere of governance in the party that has enthroned impunity and corruption. And that has become the core of governance. That is not what will operate in the APC. The chance is clear. The atmosphere in the PDP is already corrupted with impunity and cannot change. Any PDP man, who wants to join us in efforts to reposition this nation, must be ready to live by the standards of the APC. If you cannot, then of course, you shouldn’t even bother to come. The atmosphere, standards and principles in political parties are different. If you’re coming into our party, you must be ready to live and abide by the standards for good governance that the APC is meant to establish.
Analysts have also said selfish interests of APC leaders and regional interests would not allow APC last long. Have you ever envisaged this?
All I can say is that it is laughable. Those issues will always be there; conflict of interests will always be there. But, we are bound together by one iron-cast objective, and that is the welfare of our people. The greatness of this nation is what binds us together. The conflicts you’re talking about came up during the process of negotiating the merger and they were all addressed. It was one of the greatest happenings in my life to see Nigerians making sacrifices that you never thought they were capable of making. That is historic of the APC. There’ll always be clash of interests, no doubt about that. The key issue will always be ‘what is in the best interest of Nigerians; what is the best interest of the nation; what is the right thing to do.’ We cannot be divided by clashes of interests, no, we can’t. We have already established a benchmark for resolving all these conflicts because everybody has accepted that this nation has suffered enough and that it is the time for change. That is the driving force of the new movement called the APC.

Cultists stab two on reenge mission.

http://edge.punchng.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/The-crime-scene.-Inset-Rewire%E2%80%99s-corpse.jpgThe cult war between members of the Eiye Confraternity and Black Axe in Bariga and Somolu areas of Lagos State was reignited on Monday, after two youths identified as Wale Rewire and Moliki Ibadan, were stabbed to death.
PUNCH Metro learnt that two other occupants of the dilapidated house where they were killed, Michael Edem and Samuel Umeh, were also stabbed and shot but survived after policemen attached to Bariga Division came to their rescue.
It was learnt that the killing was a reprisal for the murder of another cult member, Isiaka Oyefeso, who was allegedly killed by members of the Black Axe last Tuesday on Okesuna Street, Somolu.
Our correspondent visited the house on Ebunoluwa Street, Bariga, where Ibadan and Rewire were killed. In the room, where the act took place, PUNCH Metro observed blood all over the walls and the bed ,as well as broken bottles.
Residents told our correspondent that the assailants, who wore black shirts, were about 30 in number.
A resident, who declined identification because of his safety, said the victims were set up by a friend.
He said, “One of the slain boys was a labourer who had been hired by the developer of the property where they were killed. He was the only one authorised to stay in that room, but four squatters were staying with him, bringing the total number of occupants to five.
“One of the occupants of the room came out at midnight to make a telephone call and then left. A few minutes later, about 30 hoodlums wielding knives, cutlasses, guns and broken bottles stormed the room and descended on the occupants, leaving them for dead.
“It is believed that the fifth occupant of the room was the one that gave information to the cult members.”
A police source told our correspondent that the incident occurred about 4am. The policeman said he rescued two of the victims and took them to a hospital.
He said, “About 3am, we received a distress call that some hoodlums were operating in Bariga but we could not locate the exact house on time because we were given the wrong address. Later, when we located the scene of the crime, which is in a dilapidated building, we observed that two persons had been killed.
“However, two others were still breathing so we took them to a government hospital.”
It was learnt that the fifth occupant of the room, who was said to have tipped off the cultists, had been arrested.
A senior police officer attached to Bariga Division, told PUNCH Metro that the assailants were from Johnson, Somolu.
He identified the prime suspect as Elewure, a suspected cultist, who is on the police wanted list for murder and robbery.
Elewure was also implicated in the vandalism of 100 vehicles in Bariga and Pedro area of Somolu in April.
When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide,  confirmed  the incident.
